Signs It's Time to Hire an Accounting Manager

·4 min read

An Accounting Manager is usually the layer a growing company adds when a Controller can no longer run both the day-to-day accounting team and the higher-level responsibilities the business needs from them. The signs it's time are usually visible well before anyone names the problem out loud.

Signs to Watch For

  • Month-end close is taking noticeably longer than it used to, without a clear one-time cause
  • Your Controller is spending most of their week on transactional review instead of forecasting, banking relationships, or strategic finance work
  • You have three or more accountants and no layer of day-to-day management between them and the Controller
  • Small errors or rework are creeping up — usually a sign of too many balls in the air for one person to catch
  • Your Controller has said, directly or indirectly, that they need help managing the team

Accounting Manager vs. Assistant Controller

These two roles get confused often. An Accounting Manager typically owns the day-to-day team and close process. An Assistant Controller is usually more of a Controller-in-training — someone positioned to step into the Controller seat, with broader exposure across the finance function rather than primarily team management. Which one you need depends on whether the gap is 'we need someone managing the close and the team' (Accounting Manager) or 'we need bench strength and succession planning for the Controller role' (Assistant Controller).

Accounting Manager is one of our three core specialty searches — if you're not sure which role actually fits your gap, that's a conversation worth having before you post anything.
